EVENT DETAILS

Join a small group of nature-lovers in the foothills for a relaxing outdoor workshop where you'll learn to carve your own functional wooden spoon. You'll leave with your unique creation, practical skills, and the tools to finish it at home.

You’ll be guided by two experienced spoon carvers to create your own spoon through the entire process.

We will cover:

wood grain and figure
spoon design
knife technique
hatcheting a spoon blank
blade sharpening
polishing and finishing

For thousands of years our ancestors transformed wood into essential kitchen tools—like oatmeal stirrers, soup ladles, and tea spoons—that not only serve daily needs but also hold meanings of nourishment, care, and prosperity. Across cultures, handcrafted spoons have been cherished as heartfelt gifts for occasions such as weddings, housewarmings, and the arrival of new babies.

Your instructors, Andrew Logan and Anasuya Basil, are neighbors who became friends from the shared practice of spoon carving. Together, they have taught several workshops. Andrew is a retired fire captain with decades of woodworking experience and a knack for teaching. Anasuya is a holistic health practitioner who has been carving spoons for 4 years.

Whether you're an experienced woodworker or a complete beginner, spoon carving is a rewarding way to slow down. Its portability allows you to enjoy carving during various activities, such as camping trips, backyard barbecues, or even while relaxing in a park.

Note: This workshop is not for people with low grip strength or arthritis in their hands.

There will be plenty of time for individual attention. You’ll leave with either a completed spoon or the skills to finish carving it at home.

Tuition: $210

a carving knife
a gouge
a hook knife
spoon blanks
wood for hatcheting your own blanks

Please note: Your spot is confirmed as soon as payment is received. Because class size is limited to 12 participants, we cannot hold spaces without payment.

You’re welcome to pay the full tuition of $210 when you register now OR Reserve your place with a $70 registration deposit and pay the remaining $140 at the workshop.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

If you're unable to attend, you're welcome to transfer your registration to a friend. Just let me know their name and contact information before the workshop.
If you need to cancel:
- On or before September 3: You will receive a full refund of any payments you have made, including your deposit.
- September 4–12: Materials will have been purchased for the workshop. Your $70 registration deposit is non-refundable. If you have already paid in full, the remaining $140 will be refunded. If you are unable to attend, I will gladly mail your carving tools to you (U.S. addresses only).
- On or after September 13: Because this is a small workshop, last-minute cancellations are difficult to fill. Registrations are not eligible for a refund unless your space can be filled by another participant or someone on the waiting list. If your space is filled, you will receive a refund of all payments except the $70 registration deposit. If your space cannot be filled, I will gladly mail your carving tools to you (U.S. addresses only).
You are welcome to participate! I order different tools for left-hand dominant people so please let me know by September 3.
If you still have the tool kit from one of our previous classes, you can register with a $70 deposit, and pay $70 when you arrive. You will receive spoon blanks but not a new tool kit.
